  • In Qatar, invention patents are valid for 20 years from the filing date, and annual maintenance fees must be paid starting from the second year and every year thereafter.
  • Under the 2024 directive, if a patent application remains pending for more than three years after filing, the applicant may defer annuity payments until the patent is allowed, at which point all accumulated annuities must be paid together with the grant and publication fees.
  • If the payment is overdue, it may still be made within a 6-month grace period with the late surcharge of 500.00 QAR.

  • In Qatar, industrial designs are granted an initial protection period of 5 years from the filing date, renewable twice for additional 5-year periods each, up to a maximum of 15 years.
  • Renewal fees apply every 5 years at the end of each protection period.
  • Renewal requests must be filed within the final year of the current term, but a 6-month grace period is available post-expiry, during which an additional late fee of 500 QAR is imposed alongside the standard renewal fee of 2,000 QAR per renewal (for both the first and second renewals).
  • Payments are made per design via the Ministry of Commerce and Industry's system, and failure to renew results in lapse of protection.
