- In Pakistan, an invention patent is protected for a maximum term of 20 years from the filing date, subject to the timely payment of annual renewal fees.
- No annuities are payable during the examination period; instead, the 1st renewal fee becomes due within 6 months after the date of grant.
- The initial payment must also cover all renewal fees that would have accrued from the 5th year onward during the pre-grant phase.
- After this 1st post-grant payment, annual renewals fall due each year on the anniversary of the filing date.
- Late payment is permitted within a 6-month grace period, during which the patentee must pay the outstanding renewal fee together with the prescribed surcharge of 1125.00 PKR, per month.
- If payment is not made within the grace period, the patent lapses.

- The duration of the registration of a design is initially 10 years from the date of registration, but in cases where a priority claim has been allowed the duration is 10 years from the priority date. This initial period of registration may be extended by two terms of 10 years each if an extension application is timely filed.
- The renewal fees should be paid every 10 years within the last 6 months of each 10-year protection period.
- Per month extension of time under Rule 34: 1000 PKR
- Two months extension of time for removal of objections under Rule 13: 2000 PKR
- Two months extension of time under Rule 17: 3000 PKR
- Failure to pay the renewal fee or obtain an extension within the allowable period results in the lapse of the design registration.
