- In Mongolia, an invention patent is valid for 20 years from the filing date.
- The first 5 years’ fee must be paid as a lump sum within 6 months of grant.
- Thereafter annual fees are due before each protection year — failure to pay by the due date triggers a 6-month grace period during which the fee plus a surcharge equal to the outstanding fee 30000.00 MNT can be paid.
- Failure to pay even during that period results in lapse of the patent.

- A Mongolian utility model is protected for 10 years from the filing date.
- The annual maintenance fees become payable starting from the 6th year after the filing date and must be paid each year thereafter.
- If the fee is not paid on time, it may still be paid within a 6-month grace period, subject to a late surcharge of 30,000 MNT.
