- Annuities must be paid each year to maintain the patent in force, and failure to pay by the prescribed deadline results in the lapse of the patent right, with no reinstatement once lost.
- If the patentee misses the deadline, payment may still be made during a 6-month grace period upon payment of the corresponding annual fee plus a late surcharge of MOP 250.

- A Macao utility model patent provides a maximum protection term of 10 years from the filing date, subject to the timely payment of annual fees.
- The annuity becomes due starting from the 4th year, because the fees for the first three years are already included in the initial application and registration charges.
- If the annuity is not paid on time, the patentee may still pay it within a 6-month grace period, but a late surcharge of MOP 250 is required in addition to the regular fee. Failure to pay within the grace period results in the expiration of the utility model right.

- If the renewal fee is not paid on time, the holder may still pay it within a 6-month grace period, but a late surcharge of MOP 250 will be imposed. Failure to pay the renewal fee (including the surcharge within the grace period) will result in the lapse of the industrial design right.
