  • In Israel, renewal fees for invention patents are not paid annually but in fixed multi-year intervals.
  • No renewal fees are due while the application is pending. After grant, the patentee must pay the 1st renewal fee within 3 months and simultaneously cover all renewal fees that accrued from the filing date to the grant date.
  • Subsequent renewals must be paid at the start of each statutory renewal period, which begins on the 6th, 10th, 14th, and 18th anniversaries of the filing date. Each renewal extends the patent for the next 4-year block, up to a maximum term of 20 years from the filing date.
  • If a renewal fee is not paid by its due date, a 6-month grace period is available for late payment with surcharge; failure to pay within the grace period results in lapse of the patent, subject to possible reinstatement under specific conditions.
  • If the annuity is not paid on time, it may still be paid within a 6-month grace period, but a 100% late surcharge will be applied.
