- In Iran, an invention patent is protected for 20 years from the filing date, provided that the required annual fees are paid on time.
- Annual fees must be paid every year beginning after filing and continuing through the 20-year term.
- If the annual fee is not paid by the due date, a late payment is permitted within the same 5-year period, subject to a fine equal to 50% of the annual fee for that period.
- Failure to pay within the permitted time results in lapse of the patent right.

- An industrial design is protected for a maximum of 15 years, divided into three consecutive 5-year terms.
- The holder must pay renewal fees at the end of each term to maintain validity. The initial registration fee covers the first 5 years, and renewal fees must be paid for the second 5-year period and again for the third 5-year period.
- Each term requires payment “per class,” with additional fees for each extra class included in the registration.
- If the renewal fee (and applicable late fine) is not paid within the permitted timeframe, the industrial design registration lapses.
