- The patent applicants need to maintain the standard patent application by filing Form P9 and paying the maintenance fee. If the applications cannot proceed to the second stage (request for registration and grant), the applicants may wish to maintain your application before the expiry of the 5th or any succeeding year from the anniversary of the date of filing the corresponding designated patent application first occurring after the date of publication of the request to record. Failure to maintain your application will result in your patent application being deemed withdrawn.

- In order to keep a standard patent in force up to its maximum term of 20 years, the owners are required to pay the 1st renewal fee which is due on the 4th anniversary of the date of filing of the patent application following the date of grant of a standard patent.
- The subsequent renewal payment falls due on every anniversary date thereafter until the expiry of the 20-year patent protection term.
- If miss the renewal date, there is a 6-month grace period can still renew patent at an extra cost of HKD 270.00 of that grace period.

- In order to keep a short-term patent in force up to its maximum term of 8 years, you are required to pay the renewal fee for a further 4 years before the expiry of the fourth year from the date of filing of the patent application.

- Registration of a design is for an initial period of five years beginning on the filing date of the application. By paying renewal fees, the registration can be renewed for four further periods of five years, giving protection for a maximum of 25 years.
- The owners should renew the registered design by filing Form D11 with prescribed fee before the end of the current period of registration but not earlier than 3 months immediately preceding the end of the current period.
