- On the anniversary of the filing date of the patent application, the applicant must pay the annual maintenance fees.
- The term of protection for a patent is twenty years from the filing date. Patent holders must, under penalty of forfeiture, regularly pay the annual fees for maintaining the validity of their patents on the anniversary dates of the filing date.
- In case of non-payment, a grace period of six months is granted, with a surcharge payable for each month. Failure to pay will result in the forfeiture of the patent rights.

- An industrial design patent is initially protected for 5 years. It can be renewed twice, granting a maximum protection of 15 years.
- The annuity must be paid before the expiration of the 5-year protection period. If the annuity is overdue, it can still be paid within a 6-month grace period.
