- The initial renewal fee is due in the second year after the filing date with the Norwegian Industrial Property Office (NIPO). Payment of this annual fee is mandatory, irrespective of whether the patent has been approved. The renewal is due on the final day of the same month as the filing date.
- As an illustration, with a filing date of July 15, 2020, the first renewal fee would be due by July 31, 2022.
- For the renewals that follow, payments must be made each year on the last day of the filing month.
- For instance, if a patent was filed on September 9, all future renewals must be paid by September 30 each subsequent year.
- If the renewal fee deadline is missed, it can still be paid within a 6-month grace period, but a late payment penalty of 700 NOK will be required.

- A design registration lasts for five years. Registration can be renewed for one or more periods up to a total term of 25 years. Renewal fee for the further 5-year term of the design registration validity must be paid before the expiration of the current 5-year term.
