In Portugal, invention patents are protected for up to 20 years from the filing date.Annual fees for the first two years are included in the filing fee. They are payable for the third and each subsequent year following the filing date, even have not yet been granted. No need to pay the 3-4 annual fees. Applicant must indicate to the Office that the patent should be renewed for the 3-4 years. The first payment must be made after the filing of the Portuguese translation of the international application, and must occur within 3 months from the next anniversary of the application filing date following the filing of the translation. Subsequently, annual fees become due each year during the 6 months preceding the anniversary of the international filing date.
If a renewal fee is not paid by the due date, the applicant or owner may still pay it within a 6-month grace period, subject to a surcharge of 50 % of the applicable annual fee.

In Portugal, invention patents are protected for up to 10 years from the filing date. The annual fee should be paid each year starting from the 5th year after the filing date. The due date for the payment of the annual fee will be the last day of the month in which the application date falls
If a renewal fee is not paid by the due date, the applicant or owner may still pay it within a 6-month grace period, subject to a surcharge of 50 % of the applicable annual fee.

In Portugal an industrial design registration is valid for an initial term of 5 years from the filing date and may be renewed, upon payment of the renewal fee, for additional five-year periods up to a total of 25 years. Renewal fees are payable every five years, on or before the expiry of each 5-year term.
If a renewal fee is not paid by the due date, the applicant or owner may still pay it within a 6-month grace period, subject to a surcharge of 50% of the applicable annual fee.
