- In Italy, invention patents are protected for a maximum of 20 years from the filing date. Annual fees are payable starting from the fifth year after the filing date, once the patent has been granted. If annual fees fall due while the application is still pending, they must be settled within four months from the grant date. It is also permissible to pay these annual fees in a cumulative manner.
- If a renewal fee is not paid by the due date, the applicant or owner may still pay it within a 6-month grace period, subject to a surcharge of 100 EUR.
Italian Utility Model Annuities

Italian Design Annuities

- In Italy, an industrial design registration is valid for an initial term of 5 years from the filing date and may be renewed, upon payment of the renewal fee, for additional five-year periods up to a total of 25 years. Renewal fees are payable every five years, on or before the expiry of each 5-year term.
- If a renewal fee is not paid by the due date, the applicant or owner may still pay it within a 6-month grace period, subject to a surcharge of 100 EUR.
