- In Germany, invention patents are protected for up to 20 years from the filing date. Annual fees are payable every year, commencing from the third year following the filing date. The deadline for payment is the last day of the month corresponding to the application date.
- If a renewal fee is not paid by the due date, the applicant or owner may still pay it within a 6-month grace period. No surcharge applies during the first two months of the grace period. A surcharge of 50 EUR will be incurred for the third to sixth months.
German Utility Model Annuities

- The annual fee is only payable in the 4th, 7th, and 10th years from the filing date. The due date for payment is the last day of the month corresponding to the application date. Applicants have two months to pay the fee without a surcharge, and an additional four months to pay with a late payment surcharge of 50 euros. The maintenance fee may be paid in advance, but no earlier than one year before the respective due date.

German Design Annuities

- In Germany, an industrial design registration is valid for an initial term of 5 years from the filing date and may be renewed, upon payment of the renewal fee, for additional five-year periods up to a total of 25 years. Renewal fees are payable every five years, on or before the expiry of each 5-year term.
- If a renewal fee is not paid by the due date, the applicant or owner may still pay it within a 6-month grace period. No surcharge applies during the first two months of the grace period. A surcharge of 50 EUR will be incurred for the third to sixth months.
