- In France, invention patents are protected for up to 20 years from the filing date. The first annual fee is included in the filing fee. The second annual fee, along with those for subsequent years, should be paid on the anniversary of the filing date. Annuities are due on the last day of the month corresponding to the filing date and cannot be paid more than one year in advance.
- If a renewal fee is not paid by the due date, the applicant or owner may still pay it within a 6-month grace period, subject to a surcharge of 50 % of the applicable annual fee.

- In France, an industrial design registration is valid for an initial term of 5 years from the filing date and may be renewed, upon payment of the renewal fee, for additional five-year periods up to a total of 25 years. Renewal fees are payable every five years, on or before the expiry of each 5-year term.
- If the fee is not paid by its due date, it may still be paid within a 6-month grace period, provided that a surcharge equal to 50 % of the applicable fee is also paid.
